K- Let’s Talk Pop

Yes, the title is weird, it was supposed to be a play on the word “K-pop”, a girl is trying to be entertaining. Can the world acknowledge the ever growing genre of k-pop? Seriously, there’s so much popularity, creativity, authenticity, and experimentation. Despite all that, there’s this stigma towards it.

When you start to dig deep and delve into this whole knew genre of music- you find things like concepts, groups, and “k-netizens”. It’s interesting and so overwhelming. There’s no set place to start too, because everything is so different the openings for people are endless.

Let’s Talk Concepts

Now concepts, they’re pretty self explanatory, but a concept in K-pop is the theme for a brand or idol. Most girl groups take on the concept of cutesy and girly, some take on the concept of Y2k, the possibilities are endless truthfully. If you’re looking a good reference, I believe one of the best groups to look at is Red Velvet.

Red Velvet

Having debuted in 2014, they’ve done a fantastic job at not only staying relevant- but also gaining traction even now. Not only are they popular globally, they were invited by North Korean Leader, Kim Jong-Un. There reach is insane and they are so creative with their concepts. My all time favorite concept of theirs was their horror concept. This is unique in K-pop and not very popular at all, yet they disguised it to be almost sickeningly sweet.

They had themes of murder, paranoia, and even more. I would heavily recommend them. Now hear me out- for the example I’m going to show, it seems purely cutesy- with their dancing, singing, and outfits; but let me cook! Skip to 1:14 if you’re impatient, but it is a good representation of cutesy and horror concept in K-pop.

Let me show you the deleted scenes as well, known for the eeriness and how scary they truly are. I will admit, in this video some of them are still included in the original.

K-pop is unique and there is no set group to use as an example. Another group that deserves a shoutout is BTS, but they’ll be talked about in a later post.
